Community Meeting, October 1: The Future of Plainfield's West End

1 min read

Plainfield's West End is beginning a planning process, and residents get the first word.

The City of Plainfield is hosting a community meeting on the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (NRTC) Initiative. Sankofa Construction is one of the partner organizations on this effort, leading the workforce training piece: building real career pathways into the construction trades for people who live in the neighborhood.

Thursday, October 1, 2026

6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Neighborhood House, 644 West 4th Street, Plainfield, NJ 07060

What's on the agenda: affordable housing and neighborhood improvements; workforce

development and career pathways; supportive services and resident stability; sustainability and long-term community resilience.

This is the beginning of the process, not the end of it. The planners want to hear what

residents see as the West End's strengths, challenges, and priorities before decisions get made. There will be more chances to weigh in after October 1, but this is where it starts.

Why we're part of it: Sankofa runs a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship

Program in three trades: carpentry, construction craft labor, and heavy equipment operation, with paid on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and a nationally recognized credential at the end. Revitalization only works if the people who already live in the neighborhood get the jobs that come with it. That is the piece we are carrying.
